15 Feb Lana Fountain FlakesDirector of Emerging Initiatives
“So I sat quietly, agreed politely” is something Lana Fountain Flakes, a Moss Point, MS native, chose not to do. Going against her family tradition of pursuing a career in education, Ms. Fountain Flakes majored in Biomedical Engineering, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1997. Despite having suffered from chronic illness during most of her adult life, Lana chose to overcome her obstacles with perseverance and determination. A model for the retention of women in engineering science careers, Lana has worked 14 years as a reliability engineer within the NASA/JSC Engineering Community, and currently works as Reliability Engineering Consultant.
Although Lana has found success in her education & career, some of her proudest moments are derivatives of it. From being a charter member of LA Tech’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Section, to being the current Director of Emerging Initiatives for the Society, Lana finds purpose in mentoring young women – helping them to develop strategies for long term, SELF-DEFINED personal and professional success. A recipient of the 2013 Diversity Journal Women Worth Watching Award, and the keynote speaker of the 3rd Annual Women in Engineering Conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lana embraced the global opportunity to challenge women to take-the-stage, and “roar” as a female in a male-dominated field – heralding the incredible lifetime of opportunity that await women in S.T.E.M. fields.
Outside of her work and SWE responsibilities, Lana is on a continuous pathway to learning and educational advancement. She is a member of the OneMBA Class of 2015 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – Kenan-Flagler Business School. Additionally, she volunteers as a member of USA Triathlon’s Women’s Committee, where she serves as the Grant Program Coordinator; and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She regularly travels the world – spanning many parts of Europe, Dubai, Malaysia, Vietnam, and parts of South America. For fun, she enjoys participating in triathlons, reading classic English Literature, and critiquing the wardrobe, fashion, and make-up of period films.
