Director of Economic Empowerment, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago
Lawrence Brown currently serves as the Director of Economic Empowerment for the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, the oldest and largest women’s organization in the region. In this role he is responsible for overseeing the YWCA’s programs that speak to their mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. With over a decade of sales experience within management and leadership roles, Lawrence realized opportunities to succeed are not equally dispersed, especially when these opportunities involve women and people of color.
A social entrepreneur and native south-sider, Lawrence is passionate about innovation, believing that in order to make any type of changes, a 21st century approach must be taken. Economic stability and getting more young girls involved in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) are also driving forces behind his work.
Lawrence also serves on the Executive Board of Directors for Chicago Center for Arts & Technology (CHICAT) and is one of the founding board members. Lawrence has played an integral role in the planning and development of the center that is slated to open in the fall 2016. CHICAT is an affiliate of the National Center for Arts & Technology (NCAT), a nationally recognized program and subsidiary of Manchester Bidwell. The mission of CHICAT is to heal communities, by creating an environment that stimulates the audacity of expectation through youth Arts and Technology Programs and market based adult education. As a huge fan of mindfulness and meditation, he is also working with other local organizations to help launch the 1st ever International Yoga Day on June 21st, 2015.
